Hilltop Spinners

Milt and Betty Bennett had been square dancing for about a year in February 1976, when they decided to start recreational lessons for friends and members of their Church. With a borrowed record player and microphone, lots of confidence, and very little knowledge, they started the Hilltop Spinners Square Dance Club. The Club was federated on May 10, 1977.

Officers for the first year were:

President:

Ben and Terri Orth

Vice President:

Marshall and Liz Rathbun

Secretary:

Liz Vickers (age 74)

Treasurer:

Joe and Margaret Hoover

Contact Chairmen:

Susan Bennett and Amy Compton

Federation Delegate:

Earl and Shirley Cole

Travel Chairmen:

Chuck and Charlotte Rieman

Joe and Margaret Hoover are the only current dancers who were part of the approximately 20 couples who danced as the first members of the Hilltop Spinners.

The Hilltop Spinners have danced from 8:00 to 10:30 PM, the 1st and 3rd Saturday, September through May, at the same location, the United Church of the Good Shepherd, 3500 Dodson, Kansas City, Kansas, to the same caller, Milton Bennett, for 19 years.
